Pack 874 Pinewood Derby Rules

In order to provide fun and fair races for everyone, we have a few rules that must be followed:

  1. You must make your car from the kit that was provided to you by the Pack (or a replacement kit just like it).
    • You may customize the wheels and axles that come in your kit, but you may not purchase customized wheels or axles.
    • If you want to attach custom items to your car to make it look better, that is permitted as long as the length, width and other requirements are met.
  2. No black graphite is permitted.
  3. No liquid axle lubricant is permitted.
  4. No cars can be used from the previous year. Each registered car must be newly constructed this year.
  5. All rules, as stated in the instructions provided with the kit, must be followed:
    • Maximum width – 2 3/4 inches
    • Maximum length – 7 inches
    • Maximum weight – 5 ounces
    • Width between wheels – 1 3/4 inches
    • Bottom clearance (between car and track) – 3/8 inch
    • Your car cannot ride on springs
    • No wheel bearings, washers or bushings
    • Your car cannot have any starting devices. Examples of starting devices include:
      • The race car may not be constructed or treated in such a way that the track's starting mechanism imparts momentum to the car. (For instance, this provision disqualifies cars with sticky substances on the front of the car and protrusions which may catch on the starting pin.)
      • The entire car must stage behind the starting pin.
      • The car body may have no moving parts.
  6. These rules are intended to identify only those design and operation features that are prohibited for Pack 874 Pinewood Derby cars. Let your imagination (and Internet research skills) go wild -- all other changes are fair game. If you have an idea for your car, but are uncertain as to whether it might violate any of the rules, please email Leaders@CubPack874.net.

    Race Day Procedures

All cars will be registered on the day of the race. After each car is registered, it will be assigned a number. The weight of each car will be checked at a weigh station. A weight adjustment station will be available for any car that needs an adjustment.

After the car passes final inspection, no further modifications to the car can be made.

Finally, remember good sportsmanship, the Cub Scout motto "Do Your Best," AND HAVE FUN!!!
